Professional Accounting Research

ACC 5350

Professional Accounting Research is designed to equip graduate students with the essential skills and knowledge required for conducting technical accounting research, with a focus on financial accounting research as reflected in US GAAP.

Key learning objectives include:

  • Introduce and navigate electronic databases used in professional accounting research.
  • Conduct thorough research to obtain relevant and actionable information.
  • Communicate research findings effectively through written and oral presentations.
  • Apply technical accounting concepts through case studies and real-world scenarios.
  • Explore and understand academic accounting research and conceptual accounting theory.

Course deliverables include quizzes, presentations, and group and individual memos in which students are tasked with identifying the appropriate accounting treatment for various scenarios. We also spend some time discussing how to read and evaluate academic accounting research and how to identify and, hopefully, avoid falling prey to various cognitive biases that impede our judgment.
